In these days of unrest in the world, ART seems to be at unrest also. Yesterday’s passions and knowledge of art are not now accepted. Art has to be easy just as everything else has been so easy for us. We have technically advanced extremely far today compared to just a hundred years ago. There are so many advantages we now have compared to then.
Our ancestors spent much of their time just putting food on the table, raising a family, and passing on their beliefs. Now, everything is so much easier. So much easier, in fact, that I believe we have been affected to the extent that we no longer have the morals of the older generation, we really have nothing to prove, we have too much time on our hands, and cannot appreciate what has gone before that gave us this freedom. We have not experienced the difficulties this world has gone through to reach where we are today.
The fact that there are so many people on some kind of welfare now, that drug use is rampant, that murders are on the rise, and anything goes, seems to point to a world that has gone amok. There is very little empathy or compassion, understanding or caring. Years ago we believed in taking care of ourselves, and reaping what we sowed. Now we expect our government and others to take care of us.
I really believe that ART is just one of many, many fields that has been affected by our governments and our new technological world. Modern art is our creative world’s response to the technological advances of this industrial age, and is typified by the rejection of accepted or traditional styles and values of art. Now, modern art collectors seem to select their artwork only for decoration; or to match the furnishings; or to be the most bizarre, most unusual or crudest art productions around. Modern art has been accepted at the expense of the more traditional forms of art.
Most of the general public and even the art critics of today seem not to be knowledgeable of the value of the traditional styles of art. We do not seem to know the difference between the good proven realist style of art, and this modern art, which requires very little knowledge of the rules of artistic composition, use and value. Is it no longer required to use technical skill and knowledge to produce worthwhile cultural and historical artwork?
Modern art is art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside, and untried and unproven means of art production has taken its place. Yes, this experimenting is different, it is change, it goes along with our new industrial world, but is it real art? Yes, art is in the eyes of the beholder, but shouldn’t the beholder be knowledgeable as to whether it has value or not. I’m sure you have seen modern art where you might have said or thought that you could easily paint like that. Right? Is that really what you want to see represented as today’s art, the art of your generation? Is that what you want to spend your money on?
